The Project is the initiative of TANYARADZWA CANCER
ZIMBABWE, an independent organization formed by a cervical cancer survivor, TALENT
FADZAI YAKADO. From the time Talent started having health problems to the stage
she was diagnosed of cervical cancer and finally got treatment. Talent went
through hell- due to unavailability of state of art for cancer managing
equipment, inadequate counseling services of cancer, unavailability of
expensive cancer drugs and the waiting period for to get treatment and
counseling services-incompetent nurses. This has become the motivation for her
to initiate a project aimed at advocating for the adequate wholesome cancer treatment
in Zimbabwe. She decided to go in the frontline by starting community cancer
education programs, outreach cancer programs, workshops, seminars, talk shows,
campaigns aimed at disseminating information, educating the underprivileged
members of the societies.
Talent and friends, established TANYARADZWA CANCER ZIMBABWE
after the realization that cancer mortality rate has surpassed that of the HIV
and AIDS rate, yet is not receiving enough attention and publicity it deserve
as the number one killer disease.
Underprivileged or marginalized communities have to be
empowered with the knowledge of the various cancers, educated through
workshops, seminars, stories of cancer survivors, information dissemination of
pamphlets in English, Shona, Ndebele and other languages.
Many people in our communities suffer from cancer because
they do not know what it is, they blame it on witchcraft, they seek treatment
at local medical institute, they are given clinical treatment and go back home
with painkiller tablets , they are referred to hospitals where they are
frustrated and they go back home untreated. This is what TANYARADZWA’s work
aims to improve through community based screening outreach programs, to educate
the public about the cancers, where to seek treatment and management of the
disease.. TANYARADZWA has forged partnership with churches, social networks,
communities in Mashonaland East Province and is taking its outreach to schools,
health institutions , women clubs and social gatherings to raise awareness about
cancer screening testing, dissemination of information, conducting workshops,
seminars, cancer survivors talking positively about their experiences and how
they discovered they had cancer.
Cancer has become the number one killer disease in Zimbabwe,
yet even the Ministry of Health and its partners do not give it to attention it
deserves.
